June marks the peak of peony season — and at Flower Bloom Studio, it's one of our absolute favorite times of year. These lush, layered blooms are practically the definition of luxe floral design: full-bodied, deeply fragrant, and available in a range of hues from blush white to deep burgundy. If you've been thinking about incorporating peonies into a summer wedding, event tablescape, or even a simple home arrangement, now is the moment.
Why Peonies Are a June Essential
Peonies have a notoriously short season — typically late May through mid-June — which makes them feel all the more special. Their fleeting availability is part of their allure. When a room is filled with open peonies, there's an unmistakable sense of abundance and softness that no other flower quite replicates.
From a design standpoint, peonies are extraordinarily versatile. A single stem in a bud vase makes a quiet, elegant statement. A lush cluster of coral and blush peonies in a compote arrangement becomes a true centerpiece. And when combined with garden roses, ranunculus, and trailing greenery, they anchor some of the most romantic floral designs we create all year.
Pairing Peonies: What Works Beautifully
One of the most common questions we hear at the studio is: what flowers pair well with peonies? The answer depends on the mood you're after, but here are a few of our favorite combinations right now:
Romantic and ethereal: Blush peonies with white garden roses, champagne lisianthus, and
dusty miller for a soft, dreamy palette. This combination is especially stunning for summer weddings and bridal showers.
Bold and editorial: Deep burgundy or coral peonies alongside dahlias, black-eyed Susans, and eucalyptus for a high-contrast, maximalist look that photographs beautifully.
Clean and modern: White peonies with structured greenery — Italian ruscus, bay laurel, and maidenhair fern — for a sophisticated, gallery-worthy arrangement that works in contemporary interiors.
Peonies for Weddings and Events
June is peak wedding season, and peonies are among the most requested blooms we work with for ceremonies and receptions. There's good reason for it: they photograph beautifully, they last well in floral foam and water tubes when handled correctly, and their scale gives arrangements an opulent quality that feels effortless.
For outdoor summer weddings, we recommend keeping arrangements in cooler spaces until setup to preserve the blooms at their peak. Peonies are sensitive to heat, and with careful handling, they'll stay open and lush throughout your event. For corporate events, gala centerpieces, or intimate dinner parties, a tall arrangement of mixed peonies and garden roses creates a sense of occasion without being overwrought.
Caring for Peonies at Home
If you're picking up a peony bouquet from the studio or receiving them as a gift, a few simple steps will extend their beauty significantly. Trim stems at a 45-degree angle and place them immediately in clean, cool water. Remove any foliage below the waterline to prevent bacterial growth. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat — a cool room is ideal.
Peonies purchased in bud form will open beautifully over two to three days. If you want them to open faster, warm water and a bright (but not sunny) spot will help. Change the water every other day, re-trim the stems, and your peonies can last up to a week — sometimes more.
